The good news first: if you were already on a forgiveness path, you’re still on track. Programs like the New IBR plan and PSLF remain in place, and the new RAP plan—while not as generous as SAVE—can still make sense for borrowers with debt far exceeding their income. But starting next fall, things change dramatically for new borrowers. Under RAP, they’d pay 10% of their income for 30 years, with forgiveness at the end. Not ideal, but still manageable.Contrast that with a first‑year student starting this fall. They’ll be capped at $50,000 per year. Run the math, and forgiveness essentially disappears if they earn an average income after graduation in 2030. For them, repayment—not forgiveness—will be the reality. That means the 2030s mark a turning point. Borrowers completing degrees in that decade and beyond will mostly be paying back loans directly. Strategies will still exist—like consolidating smartly, maximizing interest subsidies, or keeping payments low while starting a business or family—but forgiveness won’t be the default option anymore.Of course, policies can change. Much will depend on future elections and regulatory shifts. But as things stand, forgiveness is on a downward trajectory for new borrowers. For current borrowers, though, forgiveness remains very much alive. Despite the chaos of IDR recertification rules, PSLF buybacks, and shifting regulations, the law still provides clear paths to forgiveness well into the 2030s and 2040s. So while the future looks less forgiving for tomorrow’s students, today’s borrowers can still pursue strategies with confidence.

Under the existing rules, New IBR is often the best IDR option available because it generally offers lower monthly payments and the shortest path to forgiveness for borrowers in this group.However, this changes dramatically if you consolidate after July 1, 2026.According to updated policy summaries, any borrower who takes out or consolidates into a new Direct Consolidation Loan on or after July 1, 2026 will be funneled into RAP — the new Repayment Assistance Plan. RAP is replacing most existing IDR plans for new borrowers, and it comes with far stricter terms, including:<ul><li>Payments of 1–10% of your entire income, not discretionary income</li><li>A $10 minimum payment, eliminating $0 options</li><li>A 30-year timeline to forgiveness instead of 20 under New IBR Once you're placed in RAP, you can't switch back to New IBR if your consolidation loan was disbursed after July 1, 2026. That means many borrowers could unintentionally add 10 extra years of payments — and in some cases, lose access to the most affordable plan they qualified for. </li></ul>RAP also has no cap on payment amounts relative to income. Unlike current plans that limit payments to a percentage of discretionary income, RAP bases payments on total AGI — a significant shift that can result in higher required monthly payments over time.This is why consolidation decisions in 2026 need to be handled with extreme caution.<h3>Preparing for the Transition</h3>As July 2026 approaches, it's important for current and prospective students to prepare for the transition. The consequences are long‑term and potentially irreversible. In a system that’s undergoing one of its biggest shake‑ups in decades, preserving access to the most borrower‑friendly options can make a difference of 10 years of payments — or tens of thousands of dollars.<h3> </h3>

That is the part of the process with the firm cutoff date.However, requiring borrowers who are already enrolled in IBR—and who have already consolidated their Parent PLUS loans—to temporarily move back to ICR just to switch back to IBR again creates unnecessary complications. This extra step would increase processing times, overload loan servicers with additional applications, and contribute to even more confusion in the student loan system.It’s unclear why this requirement is being considered, but ideally it will be removed before it causes additional disruption for borrowers.Will look into best practice by March or April if this rule is not repeal.

Student Loan News -&nbsp;The new Bill Act for Student Loan Programs just passed the House by 1 vote.Now it needs to pass Senate, and members might demand large changes to a variety of the provisions.If Bill were to pass though, it would be the most wide-ranging student loan legislation since the creating of IBR and PSFL in the late 2000’s.Quick reminder of some changes.Force existing borrowers to choose between old IBR plan and the new GOP “RAP” plan Limit borrowing to just $ 150,00 0 for professional school End PSFL for physicians who start med school this fall or later Shorten the time borrowers could access forbearance and reduce the types of decrements available &nbsp; Just a short summary !!Senate is expected to propose significant modifications to this bill, but what we don’t know is if those modifications will also include a different version of student loan reform or if they will merley defer to the House on that section.Expect more information by the 4th of July weekend, as Senate finalizes their version of the bill by such date.
